The Free Call That Saves You Time, Money, and Bullshit
January is always the same.
People are full of motivation, full of “this is my year,” full of fresh notebooks and big intentions.
And I love that energy.
But I need to say this: some people approach coaching the way they approach shopping. Like they’re picking a handbag.
“Do I like the vibe?”
“Does it look good on me?”
“Will it make me feel like I’ve got my life together?”
And sure — we all want to feel supported, inspired, seen. But if you’re hiring a coach for the aesthetic of self-improvement, you’re going to be disappointed.
Coaching isn’t a purchase that changes your life. It’s a partnership that demands you do.
A lot of people don’t hire a coach because they’re ready to change. They hire a coach because they want to feel like they’re changing.
It’s like buying a gym membership and never going. You get the identity of “I’m doing something about it”… without doing anything about it.
And listen — I’ve been that person too. I’ve paid for the gym and gone once a month… and when I did go, it was basically to reduce the guilt of wasting money.
So yes, I get it. We’ve all done some version of this.
No judgement.
But if you’re going to invest in coaching, I want you to do it properly. For your sake and for mine.
Which brings me to something I’m very clear about:
A discovery call isn’t a sales call. It’s a filter.
Why I Offer a Free Discovery Call (And What It’s Actually For)
People assume a discovery call is where a coach tries to “sell you.”
Not with me.
I offer it because I want to know one thing: are we a good match?
It’s a chance for you to get a feel for me — my style, my honesty, my energy, my approach.
And it’s a chance for me to be equally honest with you.
By the end of the call, I’ll tell you if I believe we can work well together.
Because I don’t work with everyone. Not because I’m special. Because coaching only works when there’s real commitment on both sides.
And honestly? A free call that can save you a lot of money is a no-brainer.
It’s far better to spend 20–30 minutes getting clarity than to spend months (and a lot of money) in the wrong container with the wrong expectations.
Finding direction
What I’m Listening For on a Discovery Call
I’ll ask questions like:
Have you worked with a coach before? If yes, what worked? What didn’t?
What do you actually want to get out of this? What’s the ideal outcome?
What are you willing to do between sessions?
Are you ready — not emotionally “excited”… but practically ready?
And I tailor it, because people come to me for different reasons. But the theme is always the same:
Are you here to do the work, or are you here to tick a box?
Because showing up to sessions and doing nothing in between is not coaching.
It’s expensive chatting.
My Biggest Red Flags (And I’m Saying This With Love)
If someone spends the whole call complaining about everyone else…
If everything is always someone else’s fault…
If they’ve never tried the basics (and look at me like I’m an alien when I ask)…
If they want me to “fix them” while they stay exactly the same…
That’s usually a no.
Not because they’re a bad person. But because they’re not ready.
And if you’re not ready, coaching becomes another form of avoidance:
“I hired a coach, so I’m working on myself.”
Meanwhile nothing changes.
I’m not interested in being part of that story.
Here’s the Truth People Don’t Like Hearing
I like to joke that I’m a GPS.
But I want you to really hear this:
You’re driving the car.
You’re the one with your hands on the wheel. You choose the speed. You choose whether you stop. You choose whether you take the exit or ignore it and keep going in circles.
My job is to help you get clear on where you’re going — and how to get there.
So yes, I’m the GPS: I’ll give you direction, clarity, options, and I’ll calmly re-route you when you keep taking the same wrong turn.
And if you want to make the metaphor even more accurate? I’m also the DJ. I’ll help you set the tone, keep the energy up, remind you why you started, and call you out when you’re about to sabotage yourself five minutes into the journey.
But I can’t drive for you.
I can’t do the hard conversation for you.
I can’t set the boundary for you.
I can’t send the application for you.
I can’t go to the gym for you.
I can’t stop you from picking up the same old patterns again.
I can help you see it, name it, plan it, and stick to it — but you still have to move your feet or drive that car.
If You Want Coaching to Actually Work, Start Here
Before you spend a penny, ask yourself:
Am I willing to do uncomfortable things between sessions?
Am I willing to be honest (even when I don’t look good)?
Am I willing to take responsibility for my part?
Am I willing to stop outsourcing my life?
If the answer is yes, you’re already ahead of most people.
And if the answer is “not yet,” that’s not a failure. It’s information.
It just means the next step might be getting stable, getting clear, and then coming back when you’re ready to drive.
So If You’re Curious…
If you’re reading this and thinking, “Okay… I’m actually ready. I want to do this properly,” then let’s talk.
Book a free discovery call. Come as you are — messy, skeptical, unsure, overwhelmed — that’s fine.
Just come honest. Come willing.
Because if you’re ready to drive, I’m very good at helping you get where you want to go.
Love and truth,
Emma
